What is the best form of remembrance (dhikr), and is it better to recite only Surat Al-Ikhlas, or only seek forgiveness (istighfar), or read the Qur’an with multiple surahs, or glorify and exalt Allah (tasbeeh and tahlil), or to alternate between them?
The remembrance of Allah is among the best acts of drawing near to Him and the greatest in reward. It is a sign of a living heart and removes the rust from hearts. Allah has varied the forms of remembrance to prevent boredom, and all of them are good and carry immense reward. It is best for a Muslim to remember Allah with all that has been mentioned, and the Qur'an is superior to all forms of remembrance, and praising Allah is better than asking of Him. There are specific forms of remembrance that are to be recited at their designated times, such as repeating the Adhan and glorifying Allah during bowing and prostration. A Muslim should occupy their time with the remembrance of Allah to keep their heart alive, and should frequently say "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah), and be diligent in performing the specific forms of remembrance such as those in "Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah" (Deeds of the Day and Night), and should not deprive themselves of the virtue of reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas and sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
