What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding wailing over the dead?

Islam has forbidden wailing over the dead, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, considered it an act of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) and threatened those who practice it with punishment. On the authority of Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Four things in my Ummah are from the affairs of Jahiliyyah that they will not abandon: boasting of high status, slandering genealogies, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing." And on the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not one of us who strikes the cheeks, tears the garments, or calls with the call of Jahiliyyah." As for the crying of the eye and the sadness of the heart, that is not among the forbidden forms of wailing.
