What are the sayings of the Imams regarding permissible treatments that do not conflict with fasting, such as capsules/syrups, asthma inhalers, suppositories, and arterial injections?
The following matters are not considered among the things that break the fast: - Eye drops, ear drops, nasal drops and sprays, therapeutic sublingual tablets, vaginal douches and speculums, hysteroscopies, and IUDs. - Anything entering the urethra, such as catheters, endoscopes, or medication; drilling, extracting, or cleaning teeth; using a miswak or toothbrush; rinsing the mouth and gargling; and therapeutic oral sprays, provided that one avoids swallowing anything that reaches the throat. - Therapeutic injections (subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous) that are not nutritious; oxygen gas; and anesthetic gases not accompanied by nutritious fluids. - Anything absorbed by the body through the skin, such as creams, ointments, and medicinal patches. - Insertion of catheters into arteries, and insertion of endoscopes through the abdominal wall. - Taking biopsies from organs not accompanied by solutions; gastroscopy if not accompanied by the introduction of fluids; and the entry of any instrument or therapeutic substances into the brain or spinal cord. - Unintentional vomiting.
The Muslim doctor should advise the patient to postpone any of these treatments that would not harm them if delayed until after breaking the fast.
