This narration was reported by Imam Ahmad and Ibn Abi Shaybah from Ya'la bin Ubayd, from Ath-Thawri, from Muhammad bin Abi Layla, from Al-Hakam, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, as a mawquf narration (a narration attributed to a Companion, not the Prophet). All the narrators in the musnad of Ahmad and Abu Shaybah are narrators found in Muslim's collection, except for Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who is truthful but had a poor memory. This indicates that there is some discussion regarding the chain of narration. Nevertheless, Shaykh al-Islam and Ibn al-Qayyim, many Maliki and Shafi'i jurists, and the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' in the Kingdom have used it as a proof.
