What is the Shar'i ruling for one who has intercourse with his wife during her period of menstruation or post-childbirth bleeding (nifas) out of ignorance on both their parts, and what is the expiation (kaffarah) for that, and does the expiation multiply with the number of acts of intercourse within a single menstrual cycle or period of nifas, or with the number of menstrual cycles?

The majority of scholars agree that whoever deliberately has intercourse with his wife during menstruation or post-natal bleeding must repent and seek forgiveness. The Hanbalis are of the opinion that he must give a dinar or half of it in charity, and this expiation is repeated with the repetition of intercourse. The woman must learn the rulings regarding menstruation and post-natal bleeding because these relate to prayer, fasting, and her husband having intercourse with her, and the husband must command her to do so.
