Can an oath of divorce be retracted, as well as an oath not to permit one's wife to attend university?

Anger does not prevent the occurrence of divorce as long as the person is aware of what he is saying. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on swearing by divorce and conditioning it upon a stipulation. The majority of them hold that divorce occurs absolutely upon breaching the condition, and this is the fatwa (legal ruling) we follow. However, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and those who agreed with him are of the opinion that if the husband intended to effect a divorce when the conditioned event occurred, he may retract it. If he did not intend to effect a divorce but rather intended to threaten or prevent, then divorce does not occur, but he is liable for an expiation for an oath. Accordingly, the fatwa we follow is that you do not have the right to retract your conditioning of your wife's divorce on her talking to her friend. If she talks to her, her divorce occurs, and you may take her back during her waiting period if it is not the third divorce. As for your oath by Allah that she would not go to the university, you may retract it and permit her to go, and you must offer an expiation for an oath. Swearing by divorce is not legislated; what is legislated is swearing by Allah the Almighty.
