What is the ruling on fasting for someone who wishes to marry but is unable to do so?

Religion came to refine instincts and protect humankind from the consequences of being swept away by desires. Among these legislations is fasting for those unable to marry. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O young people! Whoever among you can afford to marry, let him do so, for it is more apt to lower the gaze and guard the private parts. And whoever cannot afford to marry, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him." Fasting thus reduces the impact of desire, and the need for it increases with the prevalence of temptations and allurements.
