Is what a traveler does to satisfy his wife's desires—such as limiting himself to talking and inserting things into the vagina to feel sexual pleasure—unlawful and displeasing to Allah?

It is permissible for spouses to enjoy speaking with each other, provided no one else hears them. However, masturbation, whether by hand or by a woman inserting something into her vagina, is forbidden, unless the choice is between it and fornication (zina), in which case masturbation is the lesser of the two evils. It is the wife's right that her husband not be absent from her for more than six months without an excuse. It is preferable for the husband not to prolong his absence from his wife unnecessarily, as this preserves the wife and children. Among the things that help spouses endure and remain chaste during absence are: holding fast to Allah, seeking His help, staying away from temptations, frequent fasting while guarding one's hearing and sight, and occupying one's time with beneficial deeds.
