Is a husband's abandonment of a neighbor who assaulted his wife considered forbidden abandonment or praiseworthy jealousy?

It is permissible to shun one who persists in sin if he does not repent from it. Shunning is also permissible if it serves to avert harm in religious or worldly matters. Scholars have held that the forbidden shunning between Muslims for more than three nights is that which is due to resentment or shortcomings in the rights of companionship. However, if the man has repented and there is no harm in speaking to him, then shunning him is not permissible. According to the majority of scholars, shunning ceases merely by extending and returning a greeting of peace.
