What should one do who has consumed ill-gotten wealth but does not recall its amount or its rightful owners, and will they enter Hellfire because of that?
The authentic Hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarifies that unlawful wealth prevents the acceptance of supplication. Unlawful wealth must be returned to its owner if it was taken without his consent, or given in charity on his behalf if that is not possible. However, if it was taken with his consent (such as interest), then it must be disposed of through charity, according to some scholars, while Ibn Taymiyyah holds that the penitent owns what he previously acquired from such wealth. It is prescribed for a servant to make a general repentance from all sins, as it is a cause for the forgiveness of what he has forgotten of them. And whoever has forgotten injustices against people, while being sincere in seeking to be absolved from them, it is hoped that Allah will absolve him of them, and he should supplicate for that.
