How can a student preserve their religion and morals in a mixed-gender school?

Studying in mixed-gender schools and universities is forbidden, except in cases of necessity or dire need. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not gather men and women for education; rather, he dedicated specific days to teach women alone. This is because mixing is a great trial, especially in these times when trials have increased and piety has diminished. It has been reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I have not left behind me a trial more harmful to men than women." If one is compelled to study in a mixed-gender environment, then the Shariah-compliant regulations for interaction between the sexes must be observed.
