Is it permissible to greet by saying "Salam" to the worshippers who are standing when entering the mosque late?

It is permissible to greet a person who is praying, and the praying person responds by gesturing immediately or verbally after finishing the prayer. The evidence for this is from the Prophetic Sunnah, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured in response to a greeting while he was praying. The Companions used to greet him during prayer, and he would respond to them by gesturing.

However, greeting is disliked if it becomes excessive and distracts those who are praying.
