Will a person be held accountable if he denies in his heart a desire for prominence or vanity, and neither acts upon it nor utters a word?

When sinful thoughts come to a Muslim's heart, he must detest them, fight them off, not yield to them, and not let his heart dwell on them. Whoever does this has fulfilled his duty. A person cannot eliminate or cut off thoughts, but the strength of faith and intellect helps him repel and detest the worst of them. The Companions asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about the presence of whisperings in their souls, and he said: "That is clear faith." And it was said regarding its meaning: that repelling and detesting the whisperings is clear faith, or that their existence and Satan's casting them into the soul is clear faith because they seek to oppose faith. The fruit of tranquility is reassurance for good, in terms of affirmation and certainty, and for commands, in terms of submission and obedience. So, do not let evil oppositions pass through the heart unless they are transient, so that faith may increase by repelling and rejecting them.
