The question

Am I obligated to pay zakat on the 7,000 Euros I have saved, and does Allah's saying, "Those who consume interest will not stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity," apply to me if I do not pay it? What is the amount, in Euros, that must be paid from 10,000 Euros or from 1,000 Euros? How do I pay zakat for past years if the amount changed or I forgot how much I had? Should the small amounts I previously gave be deducted from the zakat that is due now? Is it permissible to give a portion of the zakat to my sister, who is a student, for her dental treatment?

The answer

Failing to pay Zakat is a grave sin, and the punishment for the one who withholds Zakat is to be branded with it on their foreheads, sides, and backs in the fire of Hell. The obligatory amount for Zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of the money that has reached the nisab and a full year has passed over it. The nisab is equivalent to 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of pure silver. To pay Zakat for the past two years, you must estimate the amount of money owned in each year and give 2.5% of it. Any previous Zakat that was paid with the intention of fulfilling the obligatory Zakat and was spent on its legitimate recipients can be deducted. It is permissible to give Zakat to your sister for her dental treatment if she is in need of it and her father refrains from spending on her. One must be cautious of the dangers of living alone, especially in non-Islamic countries.
