The way to dispose of ill-gotten gains, such as bank interest, is to spend them on public welfare projects for the benefit of Muslims, taking back only the lawful principal. This is in accordance with the verse: "And if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged." (Quran 2:279). Any ill-gotten money that was previously spent or given as charity is not to be deducted from the interest, because it does not belong to the one who gave charity, and charity from ill-gotten gains is not accepted because Allah is good and accepts only what is good.
