What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an with one's suitor over the phone or the Internet?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The suitor is a stranger to his fiancée until the legitimate marriage contract is concluded. The engagement is merely a promise of marriage and does not permit seclusion (khalwa), touching, or unnecessary conversation. Therefore, it is preferable to abandon such actions and cease telephone calls and conversations, unless there is a legitimate need, such as arranging matters of the marriage. One must avoid soft speech and discussions of love and passion. We advise expediting the completion of the marriage or, at the very least, concluding the legitimate marriage contract.
