What are the legitimate Islamic controls and limits for phone conversations between engaged couples, and is continuous and lengthy communication that may include joking or quarreling considered exceeding these limits?

The suitor is a stranger to his fiancée. Therefore, he should not speak with her except out of necessity, such as agreeing on the date of the marriage contract. It is preferable that the conversation be with the woman's guardian. Unnecessary speech, such as asking about her well-being, is considered a temptation and a step of Shaytan, and it often involves jesting, laughter, and a soft manner of speech, which is forbidden, based on the Almighty’s saying: (Then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet). Frequent calls that take a long time are forbidden. Whoever desires such calls should complete their marriage contract to make it permissible for them.
