For a Muslim man to marry a woman from the People of the Book, it is a condition that she be chaste and genuinely follow the religion of the People of the Book. Some contemporary scholars have permitted marriage contracts to be conducted via modern communication methods, though it is preferable for both parties to the contract and the witnesses to be present in one gathering. The guardian (wali) of a woman from the People of the Book is from her own religion; if none is available, then her bishops or the Islamic judge.
