Mus'ab ibn Umayr was among the first to embrace Islam. He concealed his conversion out of fear of his family, then migrated to Abyssinia and then to Medina, where he became the first ambassador in Islam, teaching people the Quran. Many embraced Islam through him.

Mus'ab was one of the most pampered youths in Mecca, yet he abandoned all that for the sake of Islam. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said of him, "He strived for Islam with great effort, so much so that I saw his skin shriveling up like the skin of a snake shrivels." Mus'ab was martyred on the Day of Uhud, and they found nothing to shroud him with except a short, striped garment.
