What is the ruling on bank interest, given the student's need for it and the deposit of her money in her country's central bank?
Placing money in a usurious bank and taking interest from it is forbidden riba, a grave sin. It is only permissible in a case of necessity that brings the individual to the brink of destruction or near it, if they do not partake of what is unlawful. The questioner's studies do not justify partaking of riba. The questioner must withdraw the money, repent, and dispose of the interest by spending it on good causes and for the benefit of Muslims. She is permitted to take what suffices her for her needs if she is poor. There is no longer a necessity for usurious banks due to the presence of Islamic banks that practice legitimate (profit-sharing). Therefore, she should withdraw her deposit and place it in an Islamic bank.
