It is permissible to install an awning ("tenda") if it does not cause harm to passersby or neighbors, by analogy with the "rawshan" (balcony). Jurists have unanimously agreed on its permissibility if there is no harm, and this is what people have customarily done to avoid the sun and rain, to provide privacy for the household, and to ward off harm. However, care must be taken not to harm neighbors. If a neighbor is harmed by it, it should be removed; otherwise, it may remain.
