How sound is the circulating story that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the Companions to seize Abu Sufyan's caravan, saying: "Here is a caravan laden with wealth that belongs to you and is rightfully yours, so if you wish, take it"?

It is not permissible to evade paying electricity or water bills, because if a person agrees with an electricity company to supply him with electricity for a certain cost, he is not allowed to violate this agreement, due to the generality of Allah Almighty’s saying: "O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts," and the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Muslims are bound by their conditions in what is permissible." His deriving evidence from the story of Badr is incorrect, because Allah permitted Muslims to take what they gained as spoils from the disbelievers' wealth in fighting, and this differs from not fulfilling contracts, especially since the questioner lives in a Muslim society and deals with a company whose owners are Muslims.
