The majority of scholars hold that the maximum duration for post-natal bleeding () is forty days. If bleeding continues after this period, it is considered irregular bleeding (), which does not necessitate abstaining from prayer or fasting, unless it coincides with the regular menstrual period, in which case it is considered menstruation (hayd). Missed prayers during istihadah must be made up.
