The answer

Singing accompanied by instruments of amusement is prohibited. As for singing that is not accompanied by them, it is of different types: A woman's singing for men is prohibited, but for women with good speech is permissible. As for a man's singing, the content of the speech is considered; if it is good and calls to virtue, then the sound opinion is that it is permissible, provided it is not excessive. If it is ugly and calls to vice, then it is prohibited. As for prohibited singing, much and little of it is forbidden, and as for the permissible, it is not desirable to indulge in it excessively.
