What is the detailed ruling on killing ants and cockroaches?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the killing of ants, but there is no prohibition reported regarding the killing of cockroaches. Cockroaches should not be killed unless they are harmful. If they cause harm, then it is permissible to kill them. The same applies to ants: if they cause harm, it is permissible to kill them.
