What is the ruling on praying behind a hypocrite imam, despite intense dislike for him and the unavailability of another congregation, and is it permissible to pray alone at home in this case? What is the ruling if the imam commits acts that lead one out of the fold of Islam?

It is not permissible to follow a disbeliever (Kafir) in prayer. However, it is not permissible to accuse a Muslim of hypocrisy or apostasy without evidence, due to the serious implications of such accusations. The one who does so will be punished.

If a person is put forward by a group of Muslims to lead them in prayer, then it is ruled that it is permissible to follow him and that he is qualified for imamate, even if some of the congregants dislike him.

It is disliked for an Imam to lead a group in prayer when most of them dislike him, if the dislike is due to a blameworthy matter in Islamic law related to his religion or conduct. However, if the dislike is from the minority, or from the majority due to a reason unrelated to religion, then there is no dislike.

Prayer behind a disliked Imam is valid. The dislike here pertains specifically to the Imam, while there is no dislike for the congregants to pray behind him.

The criteria by which a person is put forward for imamate are for priority, and do not mean that one who does not possess them cannot lead prayer. Prayer is valid behind any Imam who meets the basic conditions of imamate (Muslim, male, not illiterate, able to recite Al-Fatiha well).

Congregational prayer is an obligation upon an able-bodied man. A congregant's dislike for the Imam does not justify his absence from the congregation, unless it is definitively proven that the Imam has apostatized. In that case, it is not permissible to follow him, and one should pray in another congregation, with the caution not to rush into declaring a Muslim an apostate and to refer to scholars in such matters.
