What is Rikaz? What is its ruling? What is the correct way to extract it?
Rikaz refers to any wealth buried by the people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era) and known to be so. The presence of signs indicating their identity, such as the names of their kings, their cross-symbols, and the like, distinguishes the Rikaz of Jahiliyyah from other buried treasures. If there is a sign indicating it belongs to Muslims, then it falls under the ruling of Luqatah (found property). There is no specific method for extracting Rikaz; rather, its ruling is that one-fifth of it must be given out, and it should be spent in the same way war spoils are spent. This is the view held by the majority of scholars. However, the Shafi'is are of the opinion that it should be spent in the same way is spent.
