What is the evidence that Udhiyah (ritual sacrifice) is Sunnah (recommended) and not Wajib (obligatory), and how is the Hadith interpreted: "Whoever has the means, and does not offer a sacrifice, let him not approach our Musalla (place of prayer)"?

There are disagreements among scholars regarding the ruling on Udhiyah (sacrifice), but most consider it a Sunnah (recommended) and not obligatory. However, some have gone to the extent of deeming it obligatory for the affluent. The opinion that Udhiyah is not obligatory is strengthened by two points: First: The principle of original acquittal, meaning that as long as no uncontradicted evidence for obligation has been presented, the default is non-obligation. Second: Authentic narrations from companions such as Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) who did not offer sacrifices for fear that people might consider it obligatory.

Whoever among the affluent chooses the path of piety and does not forgo the Udhiyah, this is more cautious and absolves them further. And Allah knows best.
