Did Adam (peace be upon him) eat from the tree out of a desire for immortality, and is immortality a blessing?

Adam ate from the tree because he was deceived by Satan's words and oath. Satan whispered to him and his wife that eating from it would make them immortal or angels. Satan swore to them that he was a sincere advisor, and promised them the tree of immortality and an unfading kingdom, which led Adam to eat out of a desire for eternal life in Paradise.
