Is it permissible to kill an ant?

It is forbidden to kill ants unless they are harmful and bothersome, and their removal is impossible except by killing them, due to the Hadith prohibiting the killing of ants, bees, hoopoe, and shrike. Some scholars have interpreted the prohibition to apply specifically to the large red ant that does not cause harm.
