If a woman drinks a medication while pregnant, knowing that it will cause an abortion, and it does, then the blood money (diyah) for the fetus is her responsibility, borne by her 'aqilah (male relatives responsible for paying blood money). This is not permissible, even if encouraged by her husband or anyone else. However, if she did not know that the medication would cause an abortion, then there is no blame on her or her 'aqilah, as Malik said, "if the medication resembles safety." It is a condition for the obligation of diyah that one knows the medication is the cause of the abortion.
