The prevalent opinion is that the maximum duration of post-natal bleeding () is forty days. If the nifas blood flows intermittently before the completion of forty days, the woman is considered to be in a state of nifas during the times the blood is present. Upon observing one of the two signs of purity (al-qassah al-bayda' - the white discharge, or dryness of the area), she is considered pure, and should perform (ritual bath) and pray.
