What is the ruling on buying cats for breeding?

The majority of scholars hold the permissibility of selling cats, while the Dhaahiris and some other scholars deem it forbidden. The prohibition is considered the more sound opinion, supported by texts. Muslim narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "forbade the price of a dog and a cat." Some scholars have weakened these hadiths, but their view is rejected because the hadith (definition) is in Sahih (definition) Muslim with a sound chain of narration, as clarified by An-Nawawi. Ash-Shawkani and Al-Bayhaqi refuted the majority's interpretation of the prohibition, emphasizing that there is no justification for deviating the prohibition from its literal meaning. Ibn Al-Qayyim firmly asserted the prohibition of selling cats due to the soundness of the hadith and the absence of any conflicting evidence.
