What is the ruling on one who studies astronomy and other sciences, and thereby grows closer to God instead of drifting away, because he finds in them a great connection to God?

The forbidden astrology is that in which astronomical calculations are used to infer unseen matters. However, contemplating Allah's signs in galaxies and celestial bodies is not forbidden.
