What is the expiation for someone who masturbated with his wife by mutual touch on numerous occasions – without intercourse – after their desires were aroused, believing that their fast had been invalidated, knowing that they were in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) and the time for Fajr had already begun? And is expiation obligatory for the wife?

If one wakes up in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity) and intends to fast, their fast is valid. Masturbation after the break of dawn is not permissible. However, if one was ignorant of its prohibition, there is no sin upon them, and their fast is valid, with no need for make-up or expiation according to the preponderant view. It is, however, recommended to make up a day for the day in which masturbation occurred, as a precautionary measure. If one retracts their intention and intends to break their fast during the day, there is a difference of opinion regarding the invalidation of the fast. However, many jurists hold that retracting the intention to fast during the day does not invalidate it. Making up the fast in this case is more precautionary.
