What is the ruling on pharmaceutical sales representatives giving gifts to doctors to encourage them to prescribe their companies' products?

This act is impermissible because it is a forbidden bribe, as it inclines the employee to favor the company that gives him the gift, and it involves consuming wealth unjustly, and harming others. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the giver and the receiver of a bribe. Furthermore, this action may harm the patient, as the doctor might prescribe a specific medication out of greed for the gift, even though another might be more beneficial for the patient.
