What must a pregnant woman who is unable to fast do?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Sharia has granted pregnant and breastfeeding women a concession to break their fast. If a woman breaks her fast out of fear for herself, or for herself and her child, she is only required to make up the missed fasts (qada'). If she fears for her fetus, she is required to make up the missed fasts (qada') and offer an expiation (kaffarah).

If a breastfeeding woman's fear for herself or her infant persists until the next Ramadan begins, she is only required to make up the missed fasts and no expiation is due from her. However, if she was able to make up the fasts but did not do so until the next Ramadan began, then in addition to making up the fasts, she must offer an expiation of feeding one poor person for each day.
