Is it sufficient to give a gift or donate with the intention of seeking absolution from backbiting people whom one cannot confront, and what is the ruling on a girl listening to her mother’s complaints that involve backbiting the husband’s family?

The conditions for repentance are: abstaining from the sin, regretting what has passed, resolving not to return to it, and returning injustices to their rightful owners or seeking their forgiveness. If the wronged person cannot be asked for forgiveness due to their death or fear of stirring up problems, then it is better to conceal the matter and repent, and to frequently seek forgiveness for the wronged person, pray for them, and praise them, while the penitent person increases in righteous deeds.

What the mother mentioned about her husband's relatives is considered backbiting, and it is not permissible except for someone who can do her justice or for a consultant to help solve problems. The daughter should not aid her mother in backbiting; rather, she should try to reconcile between her mother and her husband's family. It is permissible to convey words that bring affection, even if they are not entirely true, for the sake of reconciliation, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not a liar who reconciles between people and says good things, and conveys good things." She should also remind her mother that responding to ill-treatment with kindness may lead them to return to what is right and change their ways.
