What should I do with my wife who has repeatedly betrayed me through conversations, and I have covered for her every time, and now I am assailed by doubts and suspicions? Should I abandon her in bed and forbid her from going out and from using a communication device, and for how long?
If the wife's establishment of a relationship with a foreign man is proven true, then she has erred and exposed herself to tribulation. The husband must prevent her from corruption and protect her, for he is responsible for her. The wife must repent to Allah, and the husband must treat her kindly if she repents and shows righteousness, and he should not let doubts control him. It is not permissible to abandon the wife if she is righteous. If she returns to her previous behavior, then that is an act of defiance (nushooz), and he has the right to prevent her from going out without his permission, and she must adhere to the regulations when going out. The husband is advised to raise his family upon goodness and faith, and to be a role model for them.
