Al-San’ani said in “Subul al-Salam” that Al-Qasim ibn Muhammad narrated that he entered upon Aisha, and she uncovered for him the grave of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his two companions. He saw them as graves that were neither elevated nor level with the ground, but rather flat, covered with the red sand of the courtyard. Abu Dawud narrated in “Al-Marasil” from Salih ibn Abi Salih that he saw the Prophet’s grave about a handspan high, or close to a handspan. While Al-Bukhari narrated from Sufyan al-Tammar that he saw it mounded. Al-Bayhaqi reconciled between these accounts by stating that the grave was initially flat, then it was made mounded after the wall collapsed during the time of Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik.
