Is keeping photographic images for the purpose of remembrance permissible?

Anatomical images of animate beings are forbidden by scholarly consensus. As for photographic images of inanimate objects, such as trees, they are permissible. Photographic imaging of animate beings, however, is a matter of scholarly disagreement: Some scholars have forbidden it due to the generality of the hadiths that prohibit image-making, and because it imitates Allah’s creation, except in cases of necessity. Others have permitted it, arguing that it is merely a transmission of images created by Allah and not an imitation, and that the prohibitive hadiths are specific to what imitates Allah’s creation. If there is no need, then undoubtedly, it is better to avoid photographic imaging to steer clear of doubt. It should be noted that this disagreement is confined to photography that is originally permissible. As for photographing what is forbidden to look at, it is absolutely forbidden.
