Should a menstruating woman perform the prostration of recitation (Sujud al-Tilawah) if she recites the Quran silently to herself?
Scholars have differed regarding the prostration of recitation ( al-Tilawah). Those who do not consider it a prayer have permitted a menstruating woman to perform it, such as Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, who holds that it is even more appropriate for one who is in a state of minor ritual impurity (muhdith) to recite and prostrate. He believes that the conditions of prayer are not prerequisites for the prostration of the Qur’an, and it is permissible to perform it without purification (tahara), as was the practice of Ibn Umar. However, performing it with the conditions of prayer is better, and prostrating without purity is superior to abandoning it due to an excuse. Based on this, there is no blame upon a menstruating woman for performing the prostration of recitation if she hears or recites the Qur’an, even though it is not obligatory upon her.
