The answer

The zakat threshold (nisab) for local currencies is the lower of the two thresholds for gold and silver, which is 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The nisab should be determined by what is more beneficial for the poor. The amount due is one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%). If the money reaches this threshold and a full year (hawl) passes on it, zakat becomes obligatory. It is not permissible to invest or deposit money in interest-based (riba) banks except out of necessity (such as the absence of an Islamic bank and fear for the safety of the money). There is no zakat on interest-based gains (riba), and it is not permissible to benefit from them; rather, one must dispose of them by spending them on the poor and needy or on general Muslim welfare.
