What is the ruling regarding a man saying to his wife: "You are divorced if you go to that place"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a man makes his wife's divorce conditional upon her going to a specific place, then if she goes there, her divorce occurs according to the majority of scholars, whether he intended to enact the divorce, or merely to threaten, or prevent, or emphasize. If the divorce is less than three pronouncements, he may take her back during her 'iddah (waiting period). Some scholars, such as Ibn Taymiyyah, held that a conditional divorce intended for threat or emphasis does not occur, and instead requires an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yamin). Spouses should treat each other kindly, and the wife should obey her husband in what is right, and threatening with divorce is an unsound approach.
