How can the duration of menstruation be determined—given the presence of a brownish discharge before the blood and pinkish and yellowish discharges after it—in light of the uncertainty regarding the duration of the old habit? What is the ruling on yellowish and brownish discharges if a period of purity separates them from the blood? Are pinkish discharges considered brownish? Is it permissible to adopt different scholarly opinions for each menstrual period?

The fatwa adopted by us is that yellowish and brownish discharges are considered menstruation during the period of one's accustomed cycle or if they are continuous with blood. Anything other than that is considered purity, unless you are certain it is part of your normal cycle. You may also act upon the opinion of those who do not consider yellowish and brownish discharges after purity to be anything, and this is a strong opinion. If you are afflicted with obsessive doubts (waswasa), it is permissible for you to adopt the easiest of the madhhabs (schools of thought). However, switching between madhhabs requires that it not be out of caprice or merely seeking out dispensations. Pink color is considered a color of blood.
