A Muslim must repent from sins before it is too late, and distress may be a result of transgressions. Sins cause misfortune and hardship in life. Allah says: "And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a difficult life." A Muslim must obey Allah's commands and avoid His prohibitions, and sever forbidden relationships, and lower his gaze and guard his chastity. Allah says: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their gaze and guard their private parts." Marriage is recommended to protect one's chastity, and if a Muslim resides in the lands of the disbelievers and is able to return to the lands of the Muslims, then he must do so. One must strive to change their situation for the salvation of the soul and heart.
