How true is the saying: "If Allah loves a servant, He afflicts him"?
The reported wording, "If Allah loves a people, He afflicts them," is a sound narrated by At-Tirmidhi and others, and authenticated by Al-Albani. As for the wording, "If Allah loves a servant, He afflicts him so He may hear his supplication," it was narrated by Al-Bayhaqi and Ad-Daylami. Al-Albani deemed it very weak, but the Hadith is sound without the phrase "so He may hear his supplication," and it refers to what was reported in At-Tirmidhi's narration. Another narration was reported: "And if He loves him with the ultimate love, He chooses him for Himself, leaving him neither wealth nor children." This was narrated by At-Tabarani.
