Are light brown or pale yellow discharges a sign of purity (tahara), or should one await a pure white discharge or dryness? And if they are from menstruation, must one re-perform the ritual bath (ghusl) and make up the missed prayers?
We previously explained that yellowish and brownish discharges are menstruation during the period of habit, and also if they are connected to blood, which is the preferred view. For them to be considered menstruation, their connection to blood is a condition, not their quantity, whether much or little. Scholars have differed on the ruling of blood that exceeds the habit: whether it is established as menstruation even if this excess is not repeated, or if repetition is necessary. The preferred view is that repetition is not required. Based on this, the questioner's (ritual bath) while these yellowish discharges were present was not sufficient, because it occurred while menstruation was present. What is obligatory upon her is to perform ghusl after the cessation of blood and whatever yellowish or brownish discharge was connected to it, upon seeing one of the two signs of purity: dryness or the white discharge. She must also make up the prayers she performed after the cessation of menstruation but before her ghusl from it. This is the view of the majority of scholars and it is the most cautious.
