How can one honor a parent who is hurtful and enigmatic?

Allah has coupled kindness to parents with His worship and monotheism, which indicates the importance of honoring, obeying, and revering them. Piety towards them includes supplicating for them, lowering one's voice in their presence, smiling at them, serving them, fulfilling their wishes, consulting them, listening attentively to their speech, refraining from arguing, honoring their friends, not traveling except with their permission, not sitting in a place higher than them, offering them food, not preferring one's spouse or children over them, visiting them, offering them gifts, thanking them, striving to reduce disputes between them, and apologizing to the one among them who has been wronged. The child must adhere to these manners with their parents, regardless of their demeanor, unless doing so would lead to sin or disobedience, for the right of Allah takes precedence. He should also supplicate for their guidance and righteousness.
