Is it permissible to break up a family, orphan an innocent child, and divorce a righteous woman because the husband is the only child of his parents? And is it permissible for his parents to compel him to divorce or marry a second wife to bring in a woman to manage the household if the husband’s mother is unable to do so? And is it permissible for the husband to force his wife to pay the house rent installments?

It is the wife's right that her husband provides her with an independent dwelling, and he may not compel her to live with any of his family members unless she consents. Nor is the husband entitled to force his wife to pay the rent for the dwelling. The request for a separate dwelling is a right for the wife, and the husband may not compel her to live with his parents if that causes her harm. This does not mean that the husband should abandon his parents; rather, he can combine showing filial piety to his parents with fulfilling his wife's right, such as by allocating a private section for her in the house, or renting a nearby dwelling for her, or hiring someone to serve his parents.
